By Adil Ahmad | Business Setup Consultant, UAE Free Zones
Summary
DMCC and IFZA are two of Dubai’s most popular free zones, but they serve different founders. DMCC suits commodity traders and brands that want a premium JLT or Uptown Dubai address, with most official setup packages priced between about AED 35,000 and AED 50,000. IFZA suits consultants, e-commerce sellers and tech startups who want a lower entry cost in Dubai Silicon Oasis. Your activity, visa needs and budget should decide.
Every week, founders ask me the same question: should I set up in DMCC or IFZA? Both are respected Dubai free zones. Both give you 100% foreign ownership, a UAE residence visa route and a corporate bank account path. Yet the right choice can save you tens of thousands of dirhams over three years, or win you a client who only trusts a JLT address.
This DMCC vs IFZA comparison is written from real company setup work, not brochures alone. Where a fact comes from an official source, I link to it. Where prices change often, I tell you so, because free zone fees in the UAE are updated without much notice.
DMCC vs IFZA: At a Glance (Quick Decision Table)
If you only have one minute, this table gives you the short answer.
| Factor | DMCC | IFZA |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT) and Uptown Dubai | IFZA Business Park, Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) |
| Entry cost | Official packages from AED 35,484 (Basic Biz, 1 visa) | Zero-visa packages quoted from about AED 12,900 by authorised partners |
| Licence types | Service, Trading, Commercial, Industrial | Commercial and Professional |

| Company base | 26,000+ member companies (DMCC figure) | Not officially published |
| Best for | Commodity traders, gold and diamond firms, premium brands | Consultants, e-commerce, tech startups, solo founders |
Quick verdict: pick DMCC if your business trades physical commodities or your clients judge you by your address. Pick IFZA if you want a legitimate Dubai free zone licence at the lowest realistic cost.
License Cost: DMCC vs IFZA Setup Fees Compared
Cost is usually the first filter, so let us be precise.
DMCC setup cost. DMCC publishes its own business setup packages. At the time of writing, the main options for new founders are:
- Basic Biz Package: AED 35,484 with 1 visa and a flexi desk, for individual shareholders only (not branches or subsidiaries)
- Jump Start Package: AED 43,780 with a flexi desk or AED 49,941 with co-working, including 1 visa
- Prime Plus Package: AED 40,145 for 1 year, with no visa or office included, aimed at medium and large companies
- JLT Resident Package: AED 29,205 for people who already live in JLT
IFZA setup cost. IFZA does not publish a fixed price list on its website. Packages are grouped by visa allocation, and authorised partners commonly quote zero-visa licences from about AED 12,900. Always ask for a written quote that lists the licence, establishment card, immigration fees and any partner charges separately.
Hidden costs in both zones. Budget separately for each visa (entry permit, medical test, Emirates ID), the establishment card, office upgrades and yearly renewal. A low first-year price means little if renewal is higher, so compare the three-year total cost, not just the headline.
Corporate tax is the same rule in both. Free zone companies can pay 0% corporate tax on qualifying income if they meet the conditions of a Qualifying Free Zone Person, and 9% on other taxable income. Read the Federal Tax Authority’s Free Zone Persons Corporate Tax Guide before you assume your company pays zero.
Business Activities: What Can Each License Cover?
DMCC offers one of the widest activity lists in the UAE. Its official licence guide groups activities into four licence types:
- Service: consultancy, IT services and professional work
- Trading: importing, exporting and distributing goods
- Commercial: broader trading across several product categories
- Industrial: manufacturing and processing
DMCC is also home to specialist ecosystems such as its Crypto Centre, Gaming Centre and AI Centre, plus the commodity trade that gives the zone its name (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre).
IFZA keeps things simpler. It issues Commercial and Professional licences, and IFZA states that a licence can hold a maximum of three business activities chosen by the shareholders. For most consultants, marketing agencies, IT firms and online stores, three activities is more than enough.
Tip from practice: regulated activities such as financial services, healthcare or crypto may need extra approvals in either zone. Check this before you pay anything.
Visa Packages: DMCC vs IFZA Compared
In both zones, your visa quota depends on your package and office type.
- DMCC: Basic Biz and Jump Start each include 1 visa. More visas generally mean upgrading to larger office space.
- IFZA: packages are split by the number of visas, and IFZA lets you upgrade your allocation later as you hire.
If you plan to sponsor your family, budget for dependent visas on top. For staff, the visa itself is only part of the bill, so see our guide on the 2-year Dubai employment visa price.
Office Options: Flexi-Desk to Dedicated in Both Zones
Both free zones let you start small and scale up.
DMCC offices range from flexi desks and co-working seats to serviced and fully fitted offices in the JLT towers and Uptown Dubai. DMCC also runs lower-cost co-working routes through partner hubs such as its Nook and AstroLabs packages, listed on its official package page.
IFZA offices are based at IFZA Business Park in Dubai Silicon Oasis. According to IFZA’s flexi desk guide:
- Flexi Desk: a shared workstation with 10 hours of access per week and 1 free meeting room hour per month
- Flexi Desk+: unlimited access to your own dedicated desk and 5 free meeting room hours per month
- Private offices: available when your team or visa needs grow
My advice: do not overpay for space on day one. Start with a flexi desk, open your corporate bank account, and upgrade only when your visa count or client meetings demand it.
Prestige: JLT Address vs DSO Address
This is where DMCC earns its premium. A JLT or Uptown Dubai address signals scale, especially to banks, commodity buyers and international partners. DMCC has also been named Global Free Zone of the Year nine times, according to DMCC.
IFZA’s Dubai Silicon Oasis address is fully legitimate and widely recognised. Dubai Silicon Oasis falls under the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, created by Dubai Law No. 16 of 2021. For most service businesses, your clients care about your work and your licence, not the tower your desk sits in.
Banking reality: account approval depends far more on your business model, source of funds and documents than on the free zone name. A clean, well-documented IFZA company can open an account just as a DMCC company can. Digital banks are also an option, as covered in our Wio Bank business banking review.

FAQs
Is DMCC or IFZA better for a small business?
For most small service businesses, IFZA is the better value because its zero-visa and low-visa packages cost far less than DMCC. DMCC becomes worth it when your sector, clients or bank expect a JLT address.
What is the cheapest way to start in DMCC?
DMCC’s official Basic Biz Package, at AED 35,484 with 1 visa, is aimed at individual shareholders. JLT residents can access a resident package at AED 29,205. Check DMCC’s package page for current terms.
Can I have more than one activity on an IFZA licence?
Yes. IFZA allows up to three business activities on one licence, selected by the shareholders, subject to approval.
Is DMCC good for trading companies?
Yes. DMCC was built around commodity trade, and it supports trading, commercial and industrial licences along with services. It is the stronger choice for gold, diamond and other commodity businesses.
Do DMCC and IFZA companies pay corporate tax?
Both can benefit from the 0% rate on qualifying income if they meet the Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions set by the Federal Tax Authority. Other taxable income is taxed at 9%. Your tax position depends on your activities and substance, not on which zone you pick.
Can I switch from IFZA to DMCC later?
Moving between free zones is possible but usually involves setting up a new entity or a formal transfer process, with fresh fees. It is cheaper to choose correctly at the start.
Which free zone is faster to set up?
Both offer largely digital setup. Timelines depend mostly on how quickly your documents are ready and on any extra approvals your activity needs.
