Best UAE Free zone for trading companies guide

By Adil Ahmad | Business Setup Consultant, UAE Trading and Free Zone Companies

Summary

The best UAE free zone for trading depends on what you trade and how much. DMCC leads for commodities like gold, diamonds, tea, coffee and energy. JAFZA suits high-volume import and export through Jebel Ali Port, with published trading licence fees. IFZA, Ajman Free Zone and UAQ FTZ suit low-cost general merchandise, while Dubai South fits e-commerce trading.

Almost every week, a client tells me, “I want a general trading licence, which free zone is best?” My answer is always a question back: what are you trading, how big are your shipments, and who are your buyers?

A gold trader, a container importer and an online seller of phone accessories all need a trading licence, yet the right free zone is completely different for each. This guide compares the leading UAE free zones for trading companies and ends with a decision matrix by commodity and volume, so you can shortlist the right zone in minutes.

What Does a UAE Trading License Cover?

A trading licence lets your company buy and sell goods. JAFZA’s official guide describes it as covering importing, exporting, holding inventory and buying goods locally for resale or international distribution.

Most free zones offer two levels:

  • Trading licence: covers a limited set of related product groups, for example electronics or textiles
  • General trading licence: covers a wide range of unrelated products under one licence, which suits traders with a mixed catalogue

What a free zone trading licence does not do on its own:

  • Let you sell directly to customers on the UAE mainland. Free zone traders usually work through a mainland distributor or agent, or add a mainland licence
  • Cover manufacturing, which needs an industrial licence
  • Cover restricted goods such as alcohol, tobacco, weapons, medicines or certain foods without extra approvals from the relevant UAE authorities

If you mainly sell inside the UAE, also compare a mainland route in our general trading license in Dubai guide.

DMCC for Commodity Trading: Metals, Energy, Agricultural

DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) was built for commodity trade, and it shows. According to its 2025 results, DMCC has more than 26,000 member companies, including over 3,600 in energy.

DMCC’s commodity ecosystems include (DMCC ecosystems):

  • Gold and precious metals: covering refining, trading and investing
  • Diamonds and coloured gemstones: the Dubai Diamond Exchange, which DMCC describes as the world’s largest facility for precious stone tenders
  • Tea, coffee and cacao centres: processing and storage facilities, with over 15,000 tonnes of tea and 8,200 tonnes of coffee processed in 2025
  • Energy and agri commodities: dedicated energy and agro ecosystems for traders

DMCC Tradeflow. This is a key reason serious commodity traders choose DMCC. Tradeflow is a central registry of ownership for commodities stored in UAE warehouses. Traders can transfer or pledge title electronically, which helps them use stored goods as collateral for trade finance. DMCC reports more than 296,000 Tradeflow Islamic transactions worth AED 1.32 trillion in 2025.

Best for: gold and jewellery traders, diamond dealers, tea, coffee and agri traders, energy traders and commodity finance firms. DMCC costs more than budget zones, so it pays off mainly when you use its commodity ecosystem. See our DMCC free zone guide.

JAFZA for Import/Export: Jebel Ali Port Access

If your business moves containers, JAFZA deserves first look. It sits beside Jebel Ali Port and is described by JAFZA as the largest customs-bonded zone in the Middle East, with more than 11,000 businesses.

JAFZA’s published trading licence fees (JAFZA trading licence guide):

JAFZA licence Scope Annual fee
Trading, 1 activity group Up to 7 activities AED 5,000
Trading, 2 activity groups Up to 6 activities in each AED 8,500
General trading Unlimited groups and activities AED 15,000

On top of the licence, JAFZA requires an active lease, from co-working desks up to warehouses and land.

Why importers and exporters choose JAFZA:

  • Direct access to Jebel Ali Port, which DP World says links to more than 150 ports through over 80 weekly services
  • Customs-bonded status that suits re-export and regional distribution
  • Warehouses, showrooms and land on one site

For storage-heavy traders, read our warehouse license in Dubai guide.

IFZA, Ajman, UAQ: Low-Cost Trading License Options

Not every trader needs a port-side warehouse. If you trade general merchandise in small volumes, ship through third-party logistics or sell online, a low-cost zone can make more sense.

  • IFZA (Dubai Silicon Oasis): a Dubai address at lower cost. IFZA states that a licence can hold up to three activities, and partners commonly quote zero-visa packages from about AED 12,900. Check how your product list fits into three activities.
  • Ajman Free Zone: established in 1988 near Ajman Port, with 9,000+ companies, according to the Ajman Government. It offers business, industrial and e-commerce licences, and partners advertise entry licences from about AED 5,500.
  • UAQ Free Trade Zone: UAQ FTZ publishes a general trading licence for AED 7,000, with co-working space access and no visa, and says renewal costs the same.

Watch out: a very cheap licence often has no visa, a shared desk and limited bank appeal. Banks look closely at trading companies, so be ready with supplier contracts, invoices and a clear source of funds.

Best Trading Free Zone by Commodity and Volume

Use this decision matrix as your shortlist. It reflects how I advise trading clients in practice.

What you trade Low volume or starting out High volume or established
Gold, jewellery, precious metals DMCC DMCC
Diamonds and gemstones DMCC DMCC (Dubai Diamond Exchange)
Tea, coffee, cacao, agri commodities DMCC DMCC (processing and storage centres)
Oil, gas and energy products DMCC DMCC, with storage near the ports
Consumer goods, electronics, FMCG IFZA, Ajman Free Zone, UAQ FTZ JAFZA
Building materials, machinery, auto parts Ajman Free Zone, UAQ FTZ JAFZA
Online and e-commerce products IFZA, UAQ FTZ Dubai South (Logistics District)
Mixed catalogue, general trading UAQ FTZ, Ajman Free Zone JAFZA general trading licence

Three questions to settle it:

  1. Will you hold stock in the UAE? If yes, you need warehouse space, which points to JAFZA, Dubai South or Ajman.
  2. Do you need commodity finance or specialist facilities? If yes, DMCC is hard to beat.
  3. Is your priority the lowest licence cost? UAQ FTZ and Ajman lead, but check visas and banking needs first.

Customs registration. Whichever free zone you choose, you will need a customs code to import or export. In Dubai this is done through Dubai Trade, the Dubai Government’s trade and customs portal.

Corporate tax. Trading companies in free zones may pay 0% on qualifying income only if they meet the Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions in the Federal Tax Authority guide. Other taxable income, including many mainland sales, is taxed at 9%. Plan this before you choose your zone.
